ukactive Launches Everyone Can Consultation To Examine Fitness And Leisure Provision For Disabled People
ukactive has announced the introduction of a new consultation to examine the offer and the impact of fitness and leisure facilities for people with disabilities.
The talk is open to all gyms, fitness and vacation
facilities in the UK until the end of September and asks for details on the
measures that have been put in place to meet the needs of people with
disabilities and facilitate their participation - conclusions and
recommendations must be published.

The work is part of the ukactive Everyone program, supported
by Sport England, and aims to help remove barriers to physical activity for
people with disabilities by ensuring fitness and recreation operators are
supported to continue to improve access to their services.
Operators are encouraged to submit details to demonstrate
inclusive practices in various areas, including:
Innovation, digital and technology
Equipment and facilities
Satisfaction and customer service
Workforce training and development
Data collection and monitoring
Understand your customer's forums / comments
Design for and with people with disabilities
Campaigns and use of marketing and social networks.
The ukactive consultation will be based on the findings of
the ukactive Everyone Can report, commissioned by Sport England and the first
of its kind, which focused on the landscape of physical activity for people
with disabilities with disabilities, with a focus on the leisure sector. .
Specific areas were identified as key areas for improvement,
including: enhancing workforce skills; improve customer service levels and
better interact with people with disabilities; provide more information to
customers; communicate that gyms and recreation centers are open to all; and
begin to capture and report on the levels of use and experiences of people with
disabilities.
Designed in collaboration with people with disabilities and
active partners in the disability sector, Everyone Can will lead to the
publication of clear, achievable and practical measures for fitness and leisure
operators to develop their existing offering for people with disabilities.
People with incapacities make up one in five of the UK
population and are among the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the
lockdown restriction that followed.
Before the pandemic, the gap in activity levels was
beginning to narrow; however, people with disabilities are still twice as
likely as people without disabilities to be inactive.
The annual Activity Alliance 2021 survey showed that twice
as many people with disabilities felt that the coronavirus significantly
reduced their ability to participate in sports or physical activity (27%)
compared to people without disabilities (13%). The survey exhibited that people
with disabilities are among the least active, despite high demand and the
intention to do more.
Ukactive President Baroness Tanni Gray-Thompson said: “Our
ambition is to create a fitness and recreation sector that is freely accessible
and used by all, allowing everyone to be active and participate as they please.
“Our industry is ideally positioned to welcome more
people with disabilities and plays a vital role in giving them the opportunity
to stay active and healthy, regardless of their origin, age or ability.
“We want to thank our partners Sport England and those in
the disability industry for working with the industry to drive change, and we
urge operators of all sizes to contribute to this important work so that
together we can improve inclusion. And the accessibility of our country. gyms,
swimming pools and leisure facilities.
Adam Blaze, Strategic Disability Director for Sport England,
said: “The stark reality is that people with disabilities are twice as likely
to be inactive as the rest of the population.
“As the sports and physical activity sector recovers from
the pandemic, we must work harder than ever to ensure that people with
disabilities are not left behind.
“We welcome the launch of the Everyone Can consultation and
look forward to seeing its results. "
