What is an infrared sauna? Does it have fitness benefits
An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to generate heat. This type of sauna is sometimes referred to as a far infrared sauna: “far” means where infrared waves enter the light spectrum. A traditional sauna uses heat to heat the air, which in turn warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without heating the air around it.
In general, saunas are attracting attention because they
elicit responses similar to those caused by moderate exercises, such as sweating
and heart palpitations. An infrared sauna achieves these results at lower
temperatures than a conventional sauna, making it accessible to people who
cannot stand the heat of a conventional sauna. But does it provide tangible
health benefits? Maybe.
Several studies have examined the use of infrared saunas for
the treatment of chronic health problems such as high blood pressure,
congestive heart failure, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease, headaches, type 2
diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, with some evidence of their benefits.
However, larger and more thorough studies are needed to confirm these results.
Some of these studies have also been conducted with patients using traditional
saunas.
On the other hand, no side effects of infrared saunas have
been reported. Therefore, if you plan on relaxing in a sauna, an infrared sauna
may be an option.
